Kutztown University – Wells Rapp Center

  • Kutztown University – Wells Rapp Center

Description

The Wells Rapp Center was a two-story building that included custom metal products as a major focal point for the identity of the building as you drive up and enter the main lobby. DL Metal Design completed all stairs, including the monumental entry stair that included a three-story center perforated metal wall system with custom graphic paint. Along with the stairs, DL Metal supplied the entrance canopy, exterior railings, and powder coated trellis.

Challenges

The major challenge on this project was to create the custom trellis system at the outside vestibule. This posed issues because it was a steel powder coated system that had to be built in sections but look like a monolithic piece. The powder coating finish is a shop applied finish that does not allow for major refinishing in the field. Due to the metals used, we needed to make sure the sections were fully capped and welded watertight before the powder coating was applied. To allow for a seamless looking build our tolerances were small, and we came up with a hidden splice plate that allowed us to make the trellis look continuous but maintain sections that were able to be handled in finishing, shipping, and installation.
