University of Pennsylvania – Cast Iron and Bronze Railings

  • University of Pennsylvania – Cast Iron and Bronze Railings

Description

DL Metal Design was contracted to restore and modernize the cast-iron and bronze railings dating back to the 1870s. Our team was tasked with capturing the timeless beauty of the original design while bringing the structure up to today’s standards for quality and safety. Every element was custom-measured, fabricated, and finished by hand to ensure a perfect fit and a flawless appearance within this historic setting.

Project Value: $570,000,000

Challenges

This project presented several unique challenges. The existing stair structures were far from uniform, with significant variations due to age and wear over more than a century and a half. Every railing segment had to be field-verified and custom-fitted to accommodate these inconsistencies. Additionally, the bronze materials required careful handling and finishing to achieve a period-appropriate patina and appearance while meeting modern safety and performance standards. Coordination with the university’s design team was critical to achieving a seamless integration between old and new elements.
